I don't write reviews, but if this helps someone through the embarrassment and pains then it's worth it. I had an outbreak starting, a bad one on both sides of my mouth, i put on Viroxyn at night. In the morning i used another vial just to be sure. The "blooming" or whatever it's called, stopped. It just didn't get bigger, it stopped. There was a bit of redness left since the skin was already disturbed, but it stopped instead of getting worse for days then taking days to heal. I tried it other times before this, and was never quite sure it did any good, but now i know. It stopped. It's been 3 days and the red spots are barely there. I just bought more for the next time. I know it sounds like i am being paid, but that is not the case. I don't know of any of the other products out there, but this one performs as advertised for me.

I love this product and I can't believe that J&J does not sell it in drugstores/pharmacies in the U.S.
Here's how it works. When you feel the little tingling sensation on your lip or face, stick one of these on. Nobody will ever notice the band aid! If you put it on early enough, the blister will not hurt as much, will grow smaller and it will not develop a thick and dry skin. It heals much faster that if you don't use anything. In fact, Compeed Cold Sore Band-Aids are more effective than any other OTC cold sore medicine that I have ever tried, including Herpecin-L and Abreva.
The only thing that I don't like is the $27 price tag, which is a total rip-off. Compeed costs about $10 in any European pharmacy...

I've dealt with the 1-2x per year cold sore for years now. They're awful, but you probably already know that if you're reading this. I admit I haven't tried a lot of cures because the only thing I'd heard of that really works is prescription medication and I never remember to ask my doctor. Fast forward to last weekend when I felt a cold sore coming on. I don't get the tingling sensation everyone talks about, I just end up with soreness on my lip and that's the sign that something's wrong. By that time I know I'm hours hours away from dealing with the full symptoms. Well I did some quick research on Amazon this time and found out about Abreva and I picked it up at Wal-Mart - a bit more expensive than Amazon, but I had it in 20 minutes. I proceeded to apply it every one to two hours the first day. I was pleased to find that by the next morning the usual symptoms - blistering, scabbing, etc - had been largely avoided. I applied several times the second day. By this morning (third day), I was just left with some discomfort from where the broken skin was already healing, but it never became a full-blown cold sore. Instead of two weeks of being self-conscious and in serious discomfort, I just had a day or two of minor discomfort. Totally worth it. The packaging and most reviews will tell you to apply this as soon as you know a cold sore is forming, which I agree with. I'm not sure how the effectiveness is reduced by waiting too long and I have no intention of finding out! Anyway, give it a try.

I have to take exception to the previous review. I have had to deal with outbreaks of cold sores for over 30 years. I have been using Cold Sores Begone for the past 5 or 6 years to help alleviate the duration and severity of an outbreak. It does not prevent an outbreak and the name "Cold Sores Begone" is a bit over the top, but it does lessen the duration of the outbreak by 2 or 3 days. Others to whom I have recommended this product have said the same thing.
The product does not list lemon extract as an active ingredient, as the previous reviewer stated. The only active ingredient is allantoin. The previous reviewer has obviously not tried the product or know anything about it. Cold Sores Begone is worth a try if you have cold sore outbreaks. It has helped me.

If I don't take 1000mg of lysine per day (and sometimes even if I do), cold sores pop up and I'm stuck with the various creams or gels to treat them. I decided to try the Virulite because my favorite gel went off the market and I'm tired of taking so much lysine daily. So I stopped taking the lysine and sure enough - the tingling started. I used the Virulite and the next morning, no cold sore. Later that day, the tingling started again. So I used the virulite and again, no cold sore developed. I'm absolutely amazed! I hoped the product would work, but I never expected such impressive results. I'm completely off my lysine and have no cold sores. I wish I'd found this product years ago!
EDIT: Recently I had a cold with a high fever, which is usually a guaranteed cold sore. I felt the itch and noticed a bump on my lip, so I used the virulite. The itch and the bump went away almost immediately. No true cold sore developed. This happened twice over the duration of my cold. Before, I'd be treating the fever blisters/cold sores with gels or creams for over a week, but virulite took care of the problem right away. I absolutely love this product. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I've been struggling with those zits that start deep in the skin and take days to come to a head, leaving the skin red, swollen, and painful to the touch. I've tried all kinds of skin cleansers (which don't work since these things are coming from the INSIDE of the body, not from clogged pores) and topical remedies and nothing really seemed to help.
Then my sister suggested I try the Campho-Phenique we've had sitting in our medicine cabinet for years. I hadn't thought to try it since it says right on there "for cold sores" but closer inspection reveals that it can also be used for itching and minor burns and things. I think they probably just push the cold-sore treatment. I noticed right away that a tiny dab of the gel with a cotton swab took away the itching at the zit site and rather than the zit taking its usual growth path of swelling up further before developing into a huge whitehead, the swelling has gone down, the pain is gone, and the zit just seems to be clearing up. Its a minor miracle in my experience - I'll definitely continue to recommend it to others for this purpose.
One last note - Campho-Phenique kind of smells like Vicks Vapor Rub, in case that's an issue with consumers. Not near as strong though it could irritate the eyes (the tube recommends you do not get it near your eyes, which to me is common sense but you never know with folks ;) ).

This new pump version of Abreva is HORIBBLE! There's no way to get a small amount no matter how gently or softly you press the button on top. It's either one huge glob (because the button went all the way down) or nothing. You just don't need that much product! Whoever designed this pump must have had one thing in mind: make the user dispense WAY more than he/she needs so that it empties faster and makes him/her buy more Abreva! Don't waste your money on this version no matter how good the bargain looks. Get the tube so you can control how much of the product comes out and so that you don't waste any of this admittedly expensive (but effective) product.

I ran out of Abreva during my latest cold sore attack and the store was out. Nexcare was on sale, plus it was a package of two, so I figured I'd give it a try. I didn't notice my sore healing appreciably faster than without anything, so I won't be seeking out the product again, but the one thing I did like, is that the benzocaine numbed the sore just a little. Since I have it, I'll be using it but I'll also pick up some Abreva before my next attack.

I used to get cold sores all the time, sometimes for no appearant reason, before a big event, if I got hit in the lip or ate something too spicy. Most things I tried did not work, like Abreva made the matter worse & Camphophenique(spelled wrong I'm sure) did work pretty well. But over the past year since I've had my twins I kept getting cold sores on a regular basis probably from stress and the fact that my girls keep accidently hitting me in the lip. Not only do I hate getting cold sores because it is a COLD SORE but I also could not kiss my daughters when I had them since I didn't want to give them the virus. So I began my search to find a solution.
The SOLUTION: LYSINE!!! I started taking this over 6 months ago and have not gotten a single cold sore. There was 2 weeks where I forgot to take it, got hit in the lip & started getting the tingle & a little bump. I immediately took a Lysine & the next day it was gone. I've since been taking it everyday & will continue to take it daily. If you take it daily you should not get cold sores but if you do I have read where people take more than 1 a day till it is gone. I am not a Dr and suggest you talk with your Dr before taking any supplements.
If you are prone to cold sores, give this a try & Kiss your cold sores Goodbye like I did : )

All my life, I suffered from fever blisters ... cold sores ... canker sores ... a catch-all for PAINFUL INSIDE-AND-OUTSIDE-THE-MOUTH eruptions. [And, yes, I realize that fever blisters/cold sores are herpes simplex and different from canker sores...] I tried expensive cure-alls but always returned to Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment. It works! It accelerates healing and, when applied early, cuts the extent and duration of an eruption down to a few prickly days as opposed to a week or more of pain and, at times, unsightly sores.
Especially when the eruption is on the outside of the mouth, you MUST apply the ointment as soon as you feel a tickly-tingle EVEN BEFORE YOU SEE ANYTHING. Don't wait. Then, reapply as often as you think of it (as often as possible).
Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment is an outstanding (and, for me, essential) product.

As soon as I feel anything, I put this on and it stops it or extremely minimizes the episode. I became immune to Abreva.
I also purchased Releev and it was kind of brown and yucky and my cold sore seemed to end up getting worse than normal.
I'm sure different products work better or worse than other people. I say buy all of them and see what works best. It is worth it!

I've suffered from cold sores since I was in elementary school. Back then all I could do was run cold water over my lips and ask my mother for the numbing toothache medicine to soothe the pain.
Nowadays I rarely get a cold sore, but they're highly inconvenient when I do, so I finally caved in and tried Abreva as soon as I felt the ever-so familiar itch on my lip. I followed the directions--5-6 times a day application. Even woke up in the middle of the night to apply.
Results? I didn't have a full blown break out this time, and the one blister that did break out was fairly small and unnoticeable. Five days after the first itch the area has scabbed over completely.
I highly recommend this product to anyone suffering from cold sores. The key is to be vigilant. Buy this NOW before you feel the twinge. As soon as you feel it, apply the creme. Be diligent. Apply the creme 5-6 times per day. Let the creme soak in and dry up on your lip. Be hygenic. Wash your hands before and after applying the creme.
This product may not work for everyone, but it worked for me.

This stuff is incredible! If I can get it on at the first tingle of an oncoming cold sore, I almost never actually get a visible sore. I found this on the shelf at a chain pharmacy and thought I'd give it a try and what a find it is.
My former position required extensive travel, outdoor work in harsh weather and lots of stressful customer relations; all bad triggers for severe cold sores. I often caught people avoiding looking at me when the sores were at their worst and the other treatments were ineffectual. Those that have had severe cold sore outbreaks know how horrible it can be. Large slow healing sores on the lips chin and even the nose...
Since I started using Lysine+ over 9 months ago I have had two cold sores actually become visible. Neither of the two sores remained for more than three days and there was no scabbing. There is no comparison to anything I've used before and for the price it can't be beat. Compare the price per tube to the other leading cold sore treatments.
I purchased a four pack so I could have a tube handy when needed. The only negative I find with it is that it doesn't help with dry chapped lips very well and doesn't provide the sun protection cold sore prone lips need so keep something else for a sun protection/moisturizer.

I was asked to research a product by an older friend that could control an outbreak of Lip Rashes she would get 3 or 4 times a year, she says she has had it since she was 11 years old, and it would always start as a small red spot on her Lip or nose and get larger with a yellowish kind of scab, it was accompanied by a terrible itching. In my research I came across Herptrol and though ok new product and the reviews look good, so I bought it for her.
Two months later and she just can't stop thanking me, even asked me to buy two more tubes as she wants to have a ample supply of it just in case it should ever get pulled off the market. She says it stops the red spot from going to the next stage like no other product she has used before and if she catches it too late she says Herpetrol keeps it from spreading and cuts the healing time by about 1/3rd. (Seems to me like this thing really works)

Great product- but check the active ingredient. The secret is: IT'S THE SAME AS Bactine. Yes, THAT Bactine. As in only six bucks for a FULL BOTTLE of this stuff you get in three tiny vials here. I have no problem with someone trying to make a profit- but this is outrageous. Don't take my word for it: Compare the ingredient of Viroxin to Bactine: It's the same: Benzalkonium Cl 0.13%.

I am a dentist who sees a lot of people with cold sores, which is reactivation of the Herpes virus. The cold sore is the virus replicating usually as a result of some sort of stress that decreases one's the immune system.
Abbreva has been shown in clinical studies to be effective, but the key with this treatment or any other for that matter is to start when you first feel the tingling of another cold sore coming on. If you wait and the cold sore erupts, virtually nothing will relieve it except time and your own immune response. So start applying Abbreva immediately for the best chance to limit the development of the cold sore.
Your dentist or doctor can prescribe anti-virals in either a topical form or a tablet form for severe cold sore cases, but once again, if it is not started immediately, the cold sore will develop and stay with you for 10 days or so. Ask for Zovirax or Denavir.
Always use a lip balm with sunscreen and too much sunlight can trigger a cold sore.
Abbreva is a good product. As with any product, it will not work in everyone who tries it - but it is certainly worth a try.
