The construction and quality is what you'd expect from a Maglite with a solid and durable aluminum body and rubber gaskets inside to keep out dirt and water. The grip is also nicely textured to keep the flashlight from slipping out of your hand.
Light output is excellent with a bright, white beam and good throw distance. The reflector has been redesigned from the 2AA incandescent model and eliminates the infamous Maglite "hole" (a dark spot in the middle of the beam) when the flashlight is on full flood. Adjusting to spot isn't a dramatic difference, but it definitely puts more light in the center of the beam which can be useful in certain situations.
Batteries last a long, long time, and unlike the older incandescent model, the light output doesn't decrease to unusable levels long before the batteries are dead but rather stays clear and bright until the batteries are exhausted. The LED is also considerably more durable than an incandescent bulb, and my LED Maglite has survived knocks and drops that would have required a bulb replacement in my old incan model. And while the LED version is about an inch longer than the old model, the flashlight is still small and light enough to carry everywhere (I always keep mine on my belt so it's always handy when I need it, which is more often than you'd expect!).
I have only one caveat: the flashlight does not have reverse polarity protection meaning that if you accidentally install the batteries backwards, you'll smoke the LED and you'll have to buy a new flashlight. Just be careful when installing the batteries and you'll be fine.
It might seem a little pricey, but it's worth every penny.
----------
Edit: A year later and this little flashlight is still going strong. It never leaves my side.

This light is everything you would expect from Streamlight. The C4 led is the brightest I've ever seen and all but indestructible. I am getting my list together for more of these and others like it for gifts. The switch takes some getting used to, but once mastered this light is a formidable weapon against the dark.

I purchased the Clip light as well as the Hook light and think they are both fantastic products. With three levels of light they match my task at hand, extending the life of the AA alkalines further. I found the Hook light much more practical than the Clip light. The Hook light seems to always hang perfectly allowing you to pivot the head as needed. The Clip light seems only useful if you stand it up or have a the perfect item to clip it to like a belt or strap. The magnet at the bottom blocks about half of the opening of the clip and limits its functionality. Make sure the Clip version meets your needs, it's rather limited for me, I recommend the Hook version. I would give the hook model 5 stars but this one gets 2.
I called Streamlight to see if I could order the three components to convert it to a hook light. I was politely told by three people they don't sell the parts for converting this even though the parts are available. It seems they are more concerned about keeping the integrity of their product rather than what the customer desires. I would return it if I hadn't already thrown away the packaging.

Awesome flashlight! I got the first supertac they came out with, and it was bad to the bone. The new one they just came out with is ten times as good. Streamlight makes an awesome product. And you can't get any cheaper than Amazon! I will be shopping here again!

The Solitaire is relatively well built, but the poor beam makes it useless. Its not bright even with fresh batteries, and it QUICKLY dims. There is almost no sidespill, even when adjusted to wide beam. It eats up batteries, and has very poor beam quality.
This is the only Maglite model that I rate as below satisfactory. It flat out fails.
There are better options out there. Arc flashlights are very bright for their size, reliable, and have a good beam. They use LED bulbs that never burn out. Plus, they are semi-regulated so that they maintain their brightness for longer periods than the Solitaire. Other pocket lights worth looking at are Photon Microlights and the CMG Sonic (both use LED bulbs). Shop around, decide what works best for you and is in your price range.
That said, I cannot recommend the Mag Solitaire regardless of price. Its poor beam and dim output make it all but useless.

I bought this flashlight to take duck hunting. The camo color is great. The led is very bright. I have a 4 cell without the led and this 3 cell is much brighter. It will focus to almost a pinpoint without shadows and the flood adjustment lights up a whole area. I have owned a lot of Mag Lite flashlights and this is the best.
