Shakespeare Synergy 1 Bearing Lp Reel Review

I bought this reel for about $30 and intended on using it on my secondary rod. Firstly, it won't work on every rod, or even most rods. Because it is a "low profile" reel, it sits very close to the rod handle. On one of my rods it worked fine, but on the rod I wanted to use it on, it didn't. The shape of the rod handle was such that the reel's button wouldn't push down all the way. It would not press down enough to click and lock open, so I had to keep it pressed during my entire cast. If you insist on buying this reel, just know that your rod may not accomodate it. Secondly, despite the 2 different adjustment controls on the reel that are supposed to eliminate "backlash," this thing has the worst backlash I've ever seen. Even the shortest and softest practice casts would have the spool start free-spinning while the line around it stayed in place (yes, causing a HUGE internal tangling freak-show that required most of the spool be unwound and rewound). After I tightened both adjustments to their tightest settings, the backlash was nearly acceptable, except now my reel was so tight that I could barely cast it, and forget about casting at all unless you had a big heavy lure, or many sinkers. Thirdly, and this is the no-brainer why I'm returning this thing... I took the new reel down to the lake, and on my very first cast (aside from the short practice-casts at the house earlier), the whole thing just broke. I'm not even sure how or what broke, but partway through my cast, something jerked and the line/lure fell to the water. Upon trying to reel it in, nothing happened. It simply would not wind anymore, and every turn of the handle produced a grinding noise. The main button seems to be loose and un-pressable (as if the mechanism behind it has broken away from it).
In summary, this thing is a piece of JUNK. I will never buy a Shakespeare reel again.
