When out on the observing field I wear this light on a neck lanyard to keep it handy and have my hands free. Since I am a city dweller my best astronomy is done by travelling to dark sky sites and preserving my night vision as it can take 30 minutes to dark adapt. I attend star parties in the far western Oklahoma panhande near Black Mesa and the town of Kenton. White lights are not allowed unless its a total cloudout night or for emergencies, as many of the guests are engaged in both visual and taking astrophotography images.
The Night-Com is my favorite and most used light. It has 4 postions of the switch, Safe (preserves your batteries from accidental discharge), bright white, duel high beam Red LED, (note they have two models one has green, red is better for night vision) and what I tend to use the most and is hard to find, the single red low power LED.
The low power LED I use to read astronomical charts and descriptions, other LED lights are too bright and reflect back into your eyes from the white paper unless they have a dimmer switch, which in my humble experiance is installed in a rather fragile housing that has not held up under my usage. It is also handy to leave on when around my neck to allow others to find me in the dark on the observing field. If its time to make a trip to the break area up the hill, I switch over to the duel LED's to see to walk but am carefull to keep it pointed towards the ground so as not to disturb others dark adaptation.
It comes with a metal ring around the base, with a small split ring with a wrist lanyard (thats actually big enough) and 2 lithium batteries. I removed the wrist lanyard and clipped a standard ID neck lanyard to it and it works great. The main switch is in the tail cap, its of sturdy construction and appears to be sealed well against moisture.
Lithium batteries are expensive, yet they last a long time using the LED's and have a 10 year shelf life and can be half price if purchased by the dozen rather than buying a 2 pack. I formerly went through a 4-5 lithium batteries using a single cell standard light with a red filter for the nine day Okie-Tex Star Party, now with the Night-Com I change to a fresh pair of batteries once during the event.
I do not have any intention of buying any other kind of light than the Night-Com, its the best I have found for camping, astronomy and public service events.
