I bought my Synergy Steel spincast reel as an impulse item. After fishing for over 35 years, my basement is full of rods and reels; about 30 at last count. Most are mid-range spinning and baitcasting rods, but some nostalgia took over recently where I started looking at a spincast reel to bring back the halcyon days of a Zebco 202 and a whippy fiberglass rod. And, there sat the Synergy Steel for $9, and a gift card burning a hole in my pocket.
First, you are not going to get unbelievable quality with the SS. The plastic parts seem well molded, and the "steel" (?) parts are well finished. My reel came pre-spooled with Stren, so, as typical of a new spincast reel, it would cast longer than I remember the 202 ever doing. However, the reel handle turns with a noticeable throb when brand-new, and I wouldn't be surprised if after a while this becomes more noticeable--both by feel and by sound. If experience proves otherwise, I'll be as shocked as anyone.
The underspin lever works as expected, but seems just a tad too low for an easy reach. The drag adjustment will tighten the drag, but I haven't landed a fish yet that gave it any sort of test.
I like the red and silver color, for no better purpose than esthetic reasons. Repeating that it was pre-spooled with a name-brand line, remember that you would pay at least $2 to spool a new reel. I'm fairly happy with my impulse-item SS. However, if you're really on a fishing budget and MUST have a spincast reel, go find an Abu Garcia Abu-Matic or a Johnson Century. They will cost about the same, and last 30-40 years with proper care. Good luck, and good fishing.
